Ever since I first saw those big red chairs, I knew The Voice would be a special show. On top of that, Adam Levine, Christina Aguilera, Cee Lo Green and Blake Shelton (though I didn’t know him at the time) added all the celebrity excitement reality television needs. As one contestant stated, “The Voice is the perfect show for a real artist, because all the coaches are on the charts.”
I can’t wait to see season two. The judges will be more strategic, the performances will be crazier and the competition will be tougher. One important change from last season is that each coach will select 12 performers instead of the 8 from last season. I hope this will make for a longer, more developed season.
For those of you who didn’t watch season one of The Voice, we’ll start with a scenario from the premiere. The first contestant was Raelynn, a teenage farm girl with big dreams. She got on stage, and all four coaches sat in their chairs with their backs turned away from the stage. They listened carefully to just her voice, with no information of who she is, what she looks likes or even that she is a she. Thus the name, the Blind Auditions. After a few seconds, Adam pressed his button and spun around, the “I Want You” lights on the bottom of his chair lighting up. If no other coaches pressed their buttons, Raelynn would have automatically been on Team Adam. However, about halfway through the song, Blake also pushed his button. When Raelynn finished her song, she was ecstatic. Blake and Adam began lobbying for their respective teams. Blake claimed that he could make Raelynn a country star and Adam said he make her much more than just a country star. In the end, Raelynn chose to become the first member of Team Blake, very excited to be able to work with the husband of her “inspiration,” Miranda Lambert.
My favorite audition of the night was Jesse Cambell from Chicago. After his divorce, Jesse became a single father and eventually he and his daughter became homeless. He got back on his feet and currently works as a singer, performing at whatever events will have him. Accompanied by his brother and daughter, Jesse came to the Blind Auditions looking for an opportunity. He sang “A Song for You” by Leon Russell and he absolutely shut the house down. All four coaches turned around, and if I had a button I would have pressed it too. The coaches fought and fought, but when all was said and done, Jesse chose Team Christina. Christina said, “I will work hard for you,” and Jesse replied, “I’m ready to fight.” I personally loved Jesse’s voice and his story. He was reminiscent of last season’s champion and my personal favorite, Javier Colon. I look forward to seeing how far Jesse can go. ( Jesse Cambell – Blind Audition)
The gang was back together again: Cee Lo with his sunglasses, Blake with his country twang, Adam with his swagger and Christina looking glamorous as always. And, of course, no episode of The Voice would be complete without some good old coach fighting. Adam and Christina have developed a rivalry, only heightened because of Adam’s victory last season. During Juliet Simms’ audition, Christina wouldn’t let Adam finish a sentence, warning Juliet that he was “selling used cars.” Adam countered by saying, “Christina Aguilera is one of the best singers on Earth, but I can assure you she is not one of the best coaches.” Ironically, Juliet chose Cee Lo’s charm over Christina or Adam’s persuasion. Obviously it will be fun to see how all the coaches duke it out as the season progresses.
So here are the standings:
Team Blake: Raelynn
Team Christina: Jesse Campbell and Chris Mann
Team Cee Lo: Juilet Simms
Team Adam: Tony Lucca
This was a great start to what’s bound to be a great new season of The Voice. Until then, #TheVoice!
