We are 2 weeks away from the US presidential election! This week, former President Trump and Senator JD Vance waded into controversy around the events of the previous election, and Vice President Harris sat down for a combative interview with Fox News.
Controversy Over The Previous Election
For years, former President Trump has denied that he lost the 2020 presidential election. He has also tried to downplay the events of January 6, 2021, when pro-Trump rioters stormed the US Capitol Building, resulting in several injuries and deaths. At a Univision town hall on October 16, he continued to downplay the events. When an audience member asked a question and mentioned Trump’s actions on January 6 as a “little disturbing,” Trump answered by describing January 6 as “a day of love.”
Trump’s running mate, Senator JD Vance of Ohio, has also faced questions about the events of the 2020 election. In an October 12, 2024 interview with the New York Times, Vance was asked repeatedly whether he believed Trump lost the 2020 election. However, Vance replied that “we’re focused on the future. I think there’s an obsession here with focusing on 2020.”
However, on October 16, Vance provided a clear answer when he was asked the same question by a reporter. “No, I think there are serious problems in 2020,” Vance answered. Vance finally gave a clear “no” after sidestepping previous questions on the past election.
An Interview with Fox News
On October 16, Bret Baier of Fox News sat down for an interview with Vice President Kamala Harris. Fox News is a channel with a heavily Republican-leaning audience – in a recent Pew Research survey, 65% of Republicans say they trust Fox News. The interview turned dramatic at times, with Harris and Baier talking over each other and Harris taking difficult questions.
On immigration, Baier played a video of the mother of Jocelyn Nungaray, a 12-year-old girl killed by an illegal migrant who was released into the US. Baier then asked Harris if she wanted to apologize to the families of Americans killed by illegal migrants. “I’m so sorry for her loss,” Harris replied. “Those are tragic cases. There’s no question about that.”
During the interview, Baier also asked Harris about Americans who support Trump. “Are they misguided, the 50%? Are they stupid? What is it?” asked Baier. Harris replied, “I would never say that about the American people. And in fact, if you listen to Donald Trump, if you watch any of his rallies, he’s the one who tends to demean and belittle and diminish the American people.” Baier’s question and Harris’s response illustrate the divisions among American voters, just days before the election.
