One Direction’s ‘This Is Us’
One Direction’s new documentary film entitled “This Is Us” brings both fans and non-fans alike an inside scoop of the difficult yet rewarding lives of the popular British-Irish boy band. Directed by Morgan Spurlock, the blockbuster has earned over $49 million worldwide. Being a Directioner myself, this movie was one to remember.
The movie starts off by simply introducing the five guys who started it all: Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and Zayn Malik. Audiences get a glimpse of their childhood, when they first began to discover the joys of singing and entertaining. Before the boys auditioned for X-Factor in the UK to see if they had any chance at becoming professional singers, none of them knew each other. When Simon Cowell, their mentor and one of the X-Factor judges, decided the five would do well as a group, it came as a shock. Although apprehensive at first, they became extremely fond of each other and have been ever since.
Later on in the movie, Spurlock focuses on the boys’ spirited lives while on tour and gives us insight into the extremely busy schedules the boys have. Moviegoers observe the difficulties of living as professional singer-songwriters and learn how the members of the band handle the pressure.
Throughout the documentary, the members of One Direction express how unfamiliar and overwhelming their experiences have been, given their small-town backgrounds. They say that they still can’t believe how lucky they are to have been given this amazing opportunity. Although they appear to have adjusted to their busy lives, they regularly say that they often get homesick, so they embrace every moment spent with loved ones.
Overall, “This Is Us’” lights up the screen with great visual effects, heartwarming scenes and hilarious insider moments. Spurlock takes the audience back to the singers’ origins and highlights their humility, trying to debunk the stereotype of the vapid boy band. I would definitely recommend this film to those who aren’t familiar with One Direction.
